Einstein r\u00e9volutionn<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #cb5c39;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>a<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #cb5c39;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i> notre compr\u00e9hension du temps, de l\u2019espace et de la gravit\u00e9. Mais ceux qui les connaissaient tous les trois ont conclu que von\u00a0Neumann <\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #cb5c39;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>poss\u00e9d<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #cb5c39;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>ait de loin l\u2019intellect le plus aiguis\u00e9. <\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #cb5c39;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">[<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>]<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Les contributions intellectuelles de Von Neumann ont \u00e9t\u00e9 nombreuses et vari\u00e9es. Il a appliqu\u00e9 ses dons math\u00e9matiques \u00e0 un large \u00e9ventail de disciplines et <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">fut<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> r\u00e9volutionnaire dans nombre d\u2019entre elles. Il est probablement plus connu pour ses contributions aux math\u00e9matiques et \u00e0 l\u2019informatique, ainsi que pour son implication centrale dans le projet Manhattan. Son travail dans tous ces domaines a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 fa\u00e7onner le monde moderne.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Mais si son h\u00e9ritage est, comme l\u2019observe Bhattacharya, \u00ab\u00a0omnipr\u00e9sent dans nos vies aujourd\u2019hui\u00a0\u00bb [<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a>], c\u2019est peut-\u00eatre gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des innovations dans des domaines autres que l\u2019informatique et la technologie militaire que von\u00a0Neumann pourrait avoir un impact soci\u00e9tal encore plus important au cours des prochaines d\u00e9cennies. En particulier, dans les domaines peut-\u00eatre apparemment sans rapport de la physique th\u00e9orique et de l\u2019\u00e9conomie.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00c0 diff\u00e9rentes \u00e9tapes de sa carri\u00e8re, von\u00a0Neumann s\u2019est fortement impliqu\u00e9 dans le d\u00e9veloppement de la th\u00e9orie \u00e9conomique et, \u00e0 ce jour, on lui attribue des contributions substantielles \u00e0 cette discipline. En effet, sa fille Marina von\u00a0Neumann Whitman est devenue une \u00e9conomiste de renom et a \u00e9t\u00e9 la premi\u00e8re femme \u00e0 si\u00e9ger au Conseil des conseillers \u00e9conomiques du pr\u00e9sident des \u00c9tats-Unis [<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a>].<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">L\u2019article de Von Neumann de 1928, \u00ab\u00a0On the Theory of Parlour Games\u00a0\u00bb, est aujourd\u2019hui reconnu comme l\u2019<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u0153uvre<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> fondat<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ric<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">e de la th\u00e9orie des jeux et, bien qu\u2019il n\u2019<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">y <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">aborde que bri\u00e8vement les questions \u00e9conomiques, il a jet\u00e9 les bases d\u2019une application \u00e9tendue de la th\u00e9orie des jeux aux questions \u00e9conomiques. Von\u00a0Neumann est revenu plus explicitement sur ce lien en 1944 avec la publication d\u2019un ouvrage collectif tr\u00e8s influent, <\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>Theory of Games and Economic Behavior (Th\u00e9orie des jeux et comportement \u00e9conomique)<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Abordant un domaine distinct de l\u2019\u00e9conomie, l\u2019article de von Neumann publi\u00e9 en 1937, \u00ab\u00a0A Model of General Economic Equilibrium\u00a0\u00bb (Un mod\u00e8le d\u2019\u00e9quilibre \u00e9conomique g\u00e9n\u00e9ral), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">fut<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> r\u00e9volutionnaire dans l\u2019\u00e9laboration de la m\u00e9thodologie \u00e9conomique actuelle. Bhatt<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">a<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">char<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ya<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> note que, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 cet article, \u00ab\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">d<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">es math\u00e9maticiens, inspir\u00e9s par l<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">es r\u00e9alisations<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> de von Neumann, se sont tourn\u00e9s vers l\u2019\u00e9conomie et ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 appliquer de nouvelles m\u00e9thodes \u00e0 cette science lugubre. Dans les ann\u00e9es\u00a01950, la discipline avait \u00e9t\u00e9 transform\u00e9<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">e<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00bb [<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>].<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Parall\u00e8lement \u00e0 ses travaux de 1928 sur la th\u00e9orie des jeux, von\u00a0Neumann orienta son attention math\u00e9matique vers les probl\u00e8mes de physique r\u00e9sultant de la d\u00e9couverte de la m\u00e9canique quantique en 1925. En 1932, son ouvrage <\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics (Fondements math\u00e9matiques de la m\u00e9canique quantique<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">) a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 le premier cadre math\u00e9matique rigoureux pour la th\u00e9orie quantique. Bhattacharya note qu\u2019\u00e0 ce jour, la formulation \u00ab\u00a0reste d\u00e9finitive\u2026 [von\u00a0Neumann] a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 la th\u00e9orie de mani\u00e8re aussi coh\u00e9rente et lucide que quiconque pouvait le faire\u00a0\u00bb [<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a>]. Les physiciens Bruce Rosenblum et Fred Kuttner ont qualifi\u00e9 la th\u00e9orie quantique de plus grande r\u00e9ussite de l\u2019histoire de la science, en \u00e9crivant\u00a0:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"western\" style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><p><span style=\"color: #cb5c39;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>La th\u00e9orie quantique fonctionne parfaitement\u2026 Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 soumise \u00e0 des tests difficiles depuis huit d\u00e9cennies. Aucune pr\u00e9diction de la th\u00e9orie ne s\u2019est jamais r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9e fausse. C\u2019est la th\u00e9orie la plus \u00e9prouv\u00e9e de toute la science. Elle n\u2019a pas de concurrent\u2026<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #cb5c39;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> [<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a>]<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Cependant, en formulant cette th\u00e9orie, von\u00a0Neumann a s\u00e9rieusement remis en question les hypoth\u00e8ses dominantes sur la nature de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9, arrivant \u00e0 la conclusion extraordinaire que l\u2019esprit joue un r\u00f4le direct dans le monde physique. Dans le contexte actuel, la relation entre la physique et la conscience fait l\u2019objet d\u2019une attention renouvel\u00e9e, mais le raisonnement sp\u00e9cifique qui sous-tend le point de vue original de von Neumann sur cette question semble souvent n\u00e9glig\u00e9. Soit sa formulation n\u2019est pas mentionn\u00e9e du tout, soit sa conclusion est simplement not\u00e9e sans explication, avant que la discussion ne passe \u00e0 autre chose.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Cependant, le raisonnement th\u00e9orique de von Neumann est remarquablement simple \u00e0 comprendre pour le profane. Il aborde la question dans le dernier chapitre du livre, qui porte sur le d\u00e9sormais c\u00e9l\u00e8bre \u00ab\u00a0processus de mesure\u00a0\u00bb. Dans ce chapitre, von\u00a0Neumann d\u00e9crit comment la pr\u00e9diction du d\u00e9roulement d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nements dans le monde physique ne peut se faire sans inclure une \u00ab\u00a0mesure\u00a0\u00bb ou, plus fondamentalement, une \u00ab\u00a0observation\u00a0\u00bb. Pour utiliser une analogie, sans int\u00e9grer l\u2019observation, ce serait comme essayer de mod\u00e9liser math\u00e9matiquement l\u2019\u00e9coulement de l\u2019eau d\u2019un tuyau sans reconna\u00eetre l\u2019existence du tuyau du d\u00e9roulement.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Le physicien Nick Herbert a not\u00e9 que nous voyons dans ce chapitre un<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">e<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> \u00ab\u00a0mise \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9preuve s\u00e9v\u00e8re pour son professionnalisme\u00a0\u00bb [<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a>], car von\u00a0Neumann suit la logique math\u00e9matique pour arriver \u00e0 sa conclusion. Henry Stapp, qui a collabor\u00e9 avec certains des fondateurs de la m\u00e9canique quantique, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 qu\u2019il consid\u00e9rait la logique de von Neumann dans ce chapitre comme \u00ab\u00a0impeccable\u00a0\u00bb [<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a>]. La conclusion finale ne provient pas d\u2019une vague extrapolation ou sp\u00e9culation (comme on le dit parfois), mais, comme le r\u00e9sume Herbert, \u00ab\u00a0d\u2019un des math\u00e9maticiens les plus pratiques du monde qui d\u00e9duit les cons\u00e9quences logiques d\u2019un mod\u00e8le du monde tr\u00e8s r\u00e9ussi et purement mat\u00e9rialiste\u00a0\u00bb [<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a>].<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00c0 partir de la page\u00a0419, von\u00a0Neumann examine la situation de la mesure d\u2019une temp\u00e9rature \u00e0 l\u2019aide d\u2019un thermom\u00e8tre standard. Il proc\u00e8de ensuite \u00e0 une recherche efficace de l\u2019\u00ab\u00a0observateur\u00a0\u00bb. Il commence par l\u2019appareil de mesure lui-m\u00eame (le thermom\u00e8tre) et, apr\u00e8s avoir incorpor\u00e9 tous les processus physiques se d\u00e9roulant dans le thermom\u00e8tre dans le mod\u00e8le math\u00e9matique (en principe du moins), il note qu\u2019il reste n\u00e9cessaire pour le th\u00e9oricien de dire que le thermom\u00e8tre \u00ab\u00a0est vu par l\u2019observateur\u00a0\u00bb [<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>].<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Il suit ensuite math\u00e9matiquement la s\u00e9quence des \u00e9v\u00e9nements physiques, du thermom\u00e8tre \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153il de la personne, en passant par le globe oculaire jusqu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019image form\u00e9e sur la r\u00e9tine, en incorporant tous ces processus dans le mod\u00e8le. Ce faisant, il note qu\u2019il est toujours n\u00e9cessaire de dire <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">que <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00ab\u00a0cette image est enregistr\u00e9e par la r\u00e9tine de l\u2019observateur\u00a0\u00bb [<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a>]. Il poursuit ensuite cette logique jusqu\u2019aux r\u00e9actions chimiques dans le cerveau de l\u2019individu.
